Unlocking Teamwork: Exploring Coauthoring in Power Apps

What is Coauthoring in Power Apps?

Coauthoring in Power Apps allows multiple users to simultaneously work on and edit the same app in real-time, enhancing collaboration and speeding up development.

Business Value

Previously, multiple makers were blocked from editing an app at the same time. With coauthoring makers can author and edit a canvas app in real time. This experience accelerates the app development process and saves time by allowing multiple makers to collaborate and build apps quickly. Additionally, this capability enhances debugging, code reviews, and training when multiple makers are required.

Feature Details

Multiple makers can edit a canvas app at the same time. Previously, copresence (multiple people can view the same page) experiences in Power Apps Studio let multiple makers access a canvas app together but only one maker was able to edit the app.
The new coauthoring feature lets multiple makers collaborate and edit a canvas app at the same time, like the experience in Microsoft PowerPoint and Word. This capability empowers fusion teams to accelerate their app development lifecycle and supercharge their collaboration in Power Apps Studio. Makers can also see their colleagues' changes and presence in real time.
To use coauthoring, enable Coauthoring in the app settings.
Open your canvas app for editing and then go to Settings > Updates > Preview and set the Coauthoring toggle to On.

Limitations of Coauthoring

The following actions are not available when multiple makers are editing an app at the same time:
  • Search
  • Save as
  • Open another or new app
  • Undo and redo
  • Switch authoring versions
The maximum number of coauthors allowed is 10, either in a single session or across up to 10 tabs, depending on which limit is reached first. Any additional coauthors or tabs beyond 10 will be in copresence (only view) mode and won't be able to edit the app or see real-time updates.
The app's language is set to the locale of the first maker who opens the app for editing.
The "Cut" functionality is unavailable.
Coauthoring is disabled in the Monitor tool.
You may encounter issues with the following actions:
  • Renaming a control
  • Adding AI Builder components
  • Adding geospatial controls
  • Running a flow that another coauthor added, without refreshing the app first
  • Viewing errors from one author's actions on all other coauthors' screens
  • Copying and pasting
Conclusion

Coauthoring in Power Apps enhances collaboration by allowing multiple makers to edit apps in real-time. This feature speeds up development, fosters teamwork, and simplifies debugging. While there are some limitations, the benefits make it a powerful tool for accelerating app creation and boosting productivity.
